Saugus, Golden Valley and Castaic start season on winning notes
The Saugus football team rallied in the fourth quarter and beat Buena on the road in the opening week of the season.
Saugus was down 10 points in the fourth quarter and scored two touchdowns to take the lead and win 38 to 34.
It was the first win for Saugus in nearly two years and snapped an 11-game losing streak, including a first-round CIF playoff loss to Millikan in 20-22.
Saugus quarterback Jake Nutall threw two touchdown passes. One was an 82-yard touchdown pass to Landon Lattimore. The other was a 47-yard TD pass to Matt Long.
Kehanie Ortega added a rushing touchdown for Saugus.
Saugus led 17 to 6 at halftime. But Buena scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 20 to 13 lead.
Buena was up 34 to 24 entering the fourth quarter, but Saugus scored two touchdowns to take the lead and win the game.
Saugus coach Jason Bornn talked about how his team rallied in the fourth quarter and won the first game of the season.
Next up for Saugus is Oak Park.
The Castaic High football team won in convincing fashion over Adelanto, 45 to 7. Castaic receiver Logan Meitzner caught six passes for 167 yards and scored a touchdown. Vincent Davales caught a 50-yard touchdown pass for Castaic.
Next up for Castaic is Calabasas on the road.
The Golden Valley football team beat Westlake 19-14 and won its season opener. Golden Valley never trailed in the game, but Westlake kept it close throughout. Golden Valley running black Jamison Torres scored two touchdowns. Anthony Seragusa added another rushing touchdown and Golden Valley held on to win its first game of the season. Next up for Golden Valley is Antelope Valley.
The Valencia football team had Simi Valley on the ropes but couldn’t deliver the knockout blow. Valencia lost its season opener, 49 to 41 on the road. Valencia running back Brian Bonner had a big game scoring three touchdowns. Quarterback Brady Bretthauer threw a touchdown pass and scored on a TD run for Valencia. Wide receiver Elias Willis caught the touchdown pass from Bretthauer. But Valencia came up a little short against one of the best teams in Southern California.
Next up for Valencia is Santa Barbara.
The Hart football team lost a close one to visiting Quartz Hill at College of the Canyons, 21 to 13.
Hart took a 13 to 7 lead in the third quarter when quarterback Jacob Paisano hit tight end Oliver Welch with a touchdown pass.
But Quartz Hill scored two touchdowns late in the second half to take the lead and win the game.
Paisano scored the first touchdown for Hart on a running play.
Hart plays Burroughs in Burbank next.
The Canyon High football team had its hands full against Charter Oak, losing 44 to 6.
Keston Banos scored the only touchdown for Canyon.
Charter Oak led 37 to 6 at halftime.
Canyon will look to rebound at home against Buena, which lost to Saugus in the season opener.
The West Ranch football team had a tough opener against Pacifica, losing 42 to 6.
Pacifica quarterback Dominic Duran threw six touchdown passes. He finished with 400 yards passing.
West Ranch defensive end Max Piccolino had 4 and a half sacks.
Running back Luke De Perno scored the lone touchdown for West Ranch.
Next up for West Ranch is Cleveland High in Reseda.
CIF Baseball Playoffs
The Hart High baseball team, the Foothill League champs, plays Simi Valley in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs. Hart finished with a 21 and 5 overall record and was 10 and 2 in the Foothill League. Simi Valley is the third-place team from the Coastal Canyon League and are 11-10 and 2.
The West Ranch baseball team faces San Dimas in the first round of the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. West Ranch is the second-place team from the Foothill League and is 17, 9 and 1. San Dimas is the Valley Vista League champs and has a 23 and 4 record.
Valencia plays Aliso Niguel in the first round of the Southern Section Division 2 playoffs. Valencia is the fourth-place team from the Foothill League. Aliso Niguel is the co-champion of the Sea View League.
Castaic earned an at-large playoff bid in Southern Section Division 4 and will play Culver City in the first round. Castaic is 14 and 14. Culver City is the Bay League champion and 22 and 4.
Saugus faces Calvary Chapel in the first round of the Southern Section Division 5 playoffs. Saugus is the second-place team from the Foothill League and is 16 and 12. Calvary Chapel tied for third place in the Orange Coast League and is 14 and 10.
Trinity Classical Academy won the Heritage League championship and is undefeated at 19 and Oh. Trinity has a bye in the first round of the Southern Section Division 5 playoffs and will play the winner of the Adelanto-Marshall game in the second round.
Vasquez High from Action plays Rancho Christian in the first round of the Southern Section Division 7 playoffs. Vasquez is the second-place team from the Heritage League. Rancho Christian finished in second place in the Tri-Valley League.
And finally, Santa Clarita Christian plays Shalhevet in a Southern Section Division 8 wild-card playoff game.
CIF Softball Playoffs
The Valencia softball team won the Foothill League championship with an undefeated 12 and Oh record. The Vikings are the second-seeded team in the Southern Section Division 2 playoffs and have a bye in the first round. They will play the winner of the Ramona-La Serna game.
Saugus finished in second place in the Foothill League with a 9 and 3 record. The Centurions play Sierra Canyon, the second-place team from the Mission League, in the first round of the Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.
Hart finished in a tie with West Ranch in the Foothill League. Hart plays Fullerton, the Freeway League champion, in the first round of the Southern Section Division 3 playoffs. Fullerton is the eighth-ranked team in Southern Section Division 3 polls.
West Ranch plays Duarte in the first round of the Southern Section Division 5 playoffs. Duarte is the co-champion of the Montview League.
And in the Southern Section Division 6 playoffs, Vasquez High in Acton plays Tahquitz in the first round. Vasquez won the Heritage League championship. Tahquitz is the second-place team from the Mountain Pass League and the Number 2 ranked team in the Southern Section Division 6.

Foothill League Baseball
The Hart baseball team knocked West Ranch out of first place in the Foothill League standings winning two games against the Wildcats last week. Hart won the first game 2 to 1 and won the second game in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion, 5 to 3.
Saugus finds itself in a second-place tie with West Ranch even though they didn’t play a Foothill League last week. And Valencia is sitting in fourth place with a 7 and 5 record. Hart leads the Foothill League with an 8 and 2 record. West Ranch and Saugus are in second place with 7 and 3 records. Castaic is hanging on to a playoff spot with a 5 and 5 record in the Foothill League and a 14 and 11 record overall.
Foothill League Softball
Valencia shut out West Ranch 11 to nothing and beat Canyon 2 to 1. Saugus won a pair of games too. The Centurions beat Hart 8 to 4 and Golden Valley 8 to 4. It was a bad loss for Hart, dropping the Indians to third place in the Foothill League standings. Hart bounced back to beat Castaic 18 to 2. But Canyon has emerged as a spoiler in the Foothill League. They played Valencia in a close game and lost by one run. They also shut out Golden Valley 3 to nothing.

Foothill League Baseball
The Saugus baseball team won two Foothill League games, the Hart baseball team won two Foothill League games, and West Ranch baseball didn’t play any Foothill League games last week. Saugus beat Golden Valley twice, 6-3 the first time and 9-1 in the second game. Saugus also beat Simi Valley, 4-3, in a non-league game, and beat Narbonne, 3 to 2 in the El Camino Real Classic. Hart beat Castaic twice, 6-4 in the first game and 7-3 in the second game. Hart scored five runs in the fourth inning of the second game to take a 6-0 lead. West Ranch still leads the Foothill League standings at 7 and 1. Hart is in second place with a 6 and 2 record. Saugus is in third at 7 and 3. Valencia is hanging around with a 5 and 5 record in the Foothill League and Castaic is in trouble at 3 and 5 in the Foothill League.
Foothill League Softball
The Valencia softball team squeaked out a 2-1 win over Saugus to stay undefeated in the Foothill League. But Saugus bounced back with a blowout win over West Ranch. Valencia took a 2-1 lead over Saugus in the second inning and the rest of the game turned into a pitchers' duel. Valencia held on to win the game by one run. Saugus didn’t take the loss well and pounded West Ranch 21 to nothing. Saugus scored seven runs in the third inning to take a 16-0 lead and the game ended in a five-inning mercy rule. Valencia shut out Castaic 10-0 in its other game. Hart shut out Golden Valley 10 to nothing in a five-inning mercy-ruled game. Valencia is 9 and 0 in the Foothill League standings and in first place. Saugus is 6 and 3 and in second place. West Ranch dropped to 5 and 4 and third place in the Foothill League. Hart is 4 and 4 and in fourth place. Canyon and Golden Valley are tied for fifth place with 3 and 5 records.
Foothill League Baseball
West Ranch improved to 6-0 and leads the Foothill League standings after three weeks. But Hart has quietly put together a 10-game winning streak and is 4-0 in the Foothill League. West Ranch beat Saugus twice. In the first game, West Ranch won 8-1. West Ranch won the second game against Saugus, 9-2. In that game, Mikey Murr hit for the cycle, a home run, triple, double and single. He was 4-for-4, drove in five runs and scored three runs. Hart, meanwhile, beat Golden Valley in two games, the first 3-2 and the second 21-0. Hart scored 12 runs in the third inning in the blowout. Castaic and Saugus are battling for third place in the Foothill League and tied with 3-3 records. West Ranch and Hart play their first Foothill League game on April 17.
Foothill League Softball
Valencia is starting to pull away from the pack atop the Foothill League standings at 6-0, and three teams are tied for fourth place after the third week of league play. Valencia won two games, 11-1 over Golden Valley and 5-0 over Canyon. West Ranch beat Canyon 6-3. But Hart pulled off the upset of the week, beating West Ranch 8-5. Saugus blew out Golden Valley 21-0 to win its third Foothill League game and is tied with West Ranch for second place in the league standings at 3-2. Golden Valley, Canyon and Hart are tied for fourth place in the league standings with 2-3 records.
Foothill League Baseball
The West Ranch baseball team improved to 4-0 in the Foothill League and Castaic won its first two league games of the season last week. West Ranch shut out Canyon 11-0 in one game, and matched its run production in the other game against Canyon, winning 11-4. Castaic won its two league games over Golden Valley. The Coyotes won one game, 9-1, and the other game, 6-0. Saugus split its games in the Foothill League last week, winning one game over Valencia, 3-2 in 10 innings, and losing the other to Valencia, 5-2. West Ranch leads the Foothill League standings after two weeks with a 4-0 record. Hart is in second place with a 2-0 record. Saugus is in third place at 3-1. Castaic junior Chad Kober pitched a four-hit shutout over Golden Valley in the 6-0 game. He struck out five, walked no one and retired 13 of the last 14 Golden Valley batters in the game. Castaic won its fourth games in a row, including a 12-5 win over Chatsworth, over the weekend.
Foothill League Softball
In Foothill League softball, Valencia won two games and West Ranch lost its first league game last week. Valencia beat West Ranch 11-3 for one of its wins. The Vikings also beat Castaic, 17-5. West Ranch beat Saugus, 7-5, after losing to Valencia. But Saugus renounced too, beating Hart, 8-1. Savanna Smith had a big day at the plate for Saugus against Hart. She drove in three runs, hit a solo home run and was 3-for-4. Her teammate Avery Salazar had a big game against Hart too. She hit a two-run home run and added an RBI double. Valencia leads the Foothill League standings at 4-0 after the second week of league play. West Ranch is in second place at 2-1. Saugus is in third place at 2-2. Golden Valley beat Hart 3-2 to win its first Foothill League game of the season and beat Hart for the first time in six years. Italia Ballestrasse hit a two-run single in the fifth inning to give Golden Valley a 3-1 lead in the first game at the new field for the Hart softball team in Newhall.
